after a year disrupted by actors’ and writers’ strikes. On Sunday, the stars were out in force again for the 29th Critics Choice Awards, which was back at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar for the first time since 2020.
At last year’s ceremony, many opted for dark gowns on what would be a night of understated fashion. This time around there was, again, an abundance of black outfits, from Tracee Ellis Ross’ elegant off-shoulder Fendi Couture gown to Christina Ricci’s more risqué latex number. Rachel Brosnahan and Jennifer Aniston — in Givenchy and Dolce & Gabbana, respectively — also impressed in simple all-black outfits.
There were plenty of rosettes and floral embellishments on show, continuing a trend seen at the Golden Globes. They were worn on the shoulder (see Emily Blunt’s eye-catching Armani Privé outfit) and as a centerpiece (on Rosamund Pike’s shimmering Rodarte halter-neck gown), while fans speculated that the intricate rose detailing of Margot Robbie’s red Balmain dress was another nod to a vintage Barbie doll — namely 1996’s “Radiant Rose” Barbie.
Meanwhile, several of the evening’s best-dressed men, including Jeremy Allen White, also opted for all-black, though Colman Domingo’s mustard-and-gold Valentino ensemble, Kieran Culkin’s dapper teal Zegna suit and Matt Bomer’s all-blue Berluti look brought some welcome color.
Some of the best suits, however, were worn by the female stars, with Bella Ramsey’s mint Thom Browne two-piece and “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri’s all-white suit by The Row among the evening’s most dashing tailored looks. Greta Lee also offered a masterclass in how to rock menswear, arriving in a sparkly all-black look straight from Loewe’s Spring-Summer 2024 ready-to-wear men’s collection.
